Storm Drain Blocked

Reported via desktop in the Other (non-highways) category anonymously at 08:51, Sunday 4 August 2024

Sent to Hart District Council less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 6313023.

Although the soak away was already in a bad state of repair after the storm 1st August 2024 the irrigation channel which runs the length of Michell's Field from the top through Wheelers Hill has become completely blocked. I know of several houses that were flooded in Wheelers Hill and Vetch Field due to the water being blocked and not flowing under the houses. The tunnel on Griffin Way South was also flooded.

The irrigation channels in Michell's Field are in dire need of attention!!

Updates

  • The main culvert is cleared regularly and the ditch is walked and checked and if too much debris is blocking parts of the ditch we clear but this is an ongoing problem we’ve been dealing with for over 20 years as all the water from hartletts park / Mitchell’s field and griffin way ditch come into the corner of wheelers hill where there is the open pipe to take the water under griffin way but this blocks occasionally and that’s when it backs up but as soon as we have heavy rain we pop down and clear asap and this clears within 15 mins

  • I walk through Michell's field daily and have never seen anyone cleaning/clearing the Culvert either left or right in the 35 years I've lived in Hook. Throughout the year not only is rubbish thrown in the Culvert mainly from the younger generation but not exclusively also debris from the various fauna in the surrounding areas. The Culvert needs to be completely dredged to stop the blockages and flooding.

  • Please don’t post anonymously and say we don’t clear this out ( calling me a liar !!) as we do carry this work out and was there Friday mid morning removing as much as we could to keep the brook flowing

  • As per previous emails, I am merely reporting issues to what I believe to be the council. I don't expect to speak to the contractors and get abuse or excuses. I am providing a public service.

At the end of the day the Brook, Culvert, Ditch, Soak Away, Storm Drain whatever you want to call it is blocked and full of debris from top to bottom and requires clearing!

  • This culvert is cleaned out regularly by HPC’s contractor even though it should be by the environment agency. The team do it every time we have heavy rain because of the small size of the culvert it needs to be clear as it cannot cope with the water that comes across from Hartletts.

  • It matters not who is responsible for the Culvert only that it needs some attention. Photo from this morning attached.

The entire ditch running the length top to bottom of Mitchell's Field is full of debris and requires clearing so that the water can flow freely this hasn't been done for several years. Please visit the site and walk along the ditch so that the council can see for themselves what the issue is. The Culvert is the end result of this.

When it does rain the water overflows across the footpath into the school gate, another reason for clearing the ditch so that the children don't go to school with wet feet.

If this isn't the responsibility of HDC then pass it on to the correct authority. Do not close the report until the issue is rectified.

  • Although partially unblocked the culvert is about half way blocked up of silt and debris still. Certainly require more work.

The drainage system in Michells Field requires maintenance from top to bottom as per previous reports.

  • Just checked the ditch and all running fine after the heavy rain so no action needed the only action needed is keeping the drain grid free of debris as we do everytime after or during heavy rain

  • I’m looking into this, the problem is it is no longer the field ditch I knew as a child in the mid 60’s but the water run off from Hartletts park that runs down into this culvert. Everywhere is flooding at the moment, 1st august 2 months rain in under an hour, this week a months worth of rain in 2 days. Clearing the ditch in Mitchell’s field is not the solution as the majority of water comes down the path by the courts from Hartletts all run off from the flooding in the centre of the village, through the school and heads downhill. All drainage in the village has not been cleared for years, the 200 damaged houses is testament to this.

  • This is the main problem as I’ve always said the main problem is the 18 inch x 18 inch grid at the bottom of the culvert that was put in when wheelers hill was built it has to take all the water from Mitchell’s / school/ hartletts/ tennis courts/ griffin way ditch and as soon as a stick lays in front of it you then get debris stacking against it and then blocks and overflows into wheelers hill and quince tree , if the grid was made bigger this might solve some of the issues but it does have to take a lot of water each time it rains
