Rubbish Skateboard park and general public areas

Reported via desktop in the Street cleaning category anonymously at 11:02, Mon 24 July 2023

Sent to Hart District Council 1 minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 4818837.

Over the past month the bins in the Hook public areas appear to no get emptied for weeks at a time. These include Harletts Park, Wellworth Park and Bell Meadow where the bins have been full to busting.

Now that the new skateboard park has opened it is inevitably very popular not only with children but also with adults. There is RUBBISH everywhere around the new skateboard park which is in turn blowing onto the main park areas. Please ensure that all bins are emptied daily including the dog bins as these are also being used for general rubbish.

If we could have signage to suggest that people take their rubbish with them this would also help. I do a daily clean-up while walking my dog of the disgusting mess that is left by parents around the school gates.

Updates

  • Thank you for taking the time to contact fix my street, the Parish Council is disappointed and saddened to read your comments our contractor takes great pride in their work and will often carry out additional visits if required to keep the areas managed by the Parish Council clear for all to enjoy. I would be grateful if you could provide photos of the areas you have raised concerns about in your feedback to (amenities@hook.gov.uk) and I can investigate this further. Thank you for your continued efforts in keeping Hook clean and for contacting fix my street.

Kindest Regards Sarah Environment and Community Officer

  • This is now a daily occurrence I clean it up everyday and everyday there is more rubbish dropped around the park. No extra bins have been provided. A the area where the people congregate to leave their gear is the worst of all.

  • Thank you for your updates and continued support in keeping the site clear or rubbish. I am currently in the process of collating quotes for an additional bin for the site, the costs to consider are not only purchasing of a bin, but installing it and ongoing emptying of it. These prices will be discussed by Councillors at the next Environment and Community Meeting. Thank you again for taking the time to feedback, I am now back from annual leave and will also continue my daily visits to the site.

    Kindest Regards

  • I continue to press for a resolution on Hook rubbish problems but there is no further progress. There needs to be an all out campaign to Keep Hook Tidy. However before this can happen the council needs to provide adequate facilities for people to put their rubbish in.

  • Despite continued communication with the council the issue continues. Much worse now that the skate park is officially opened. Lack of amenities and a continuous health hazard.

  • Same almost daily but much worse on weekends and school holidays. Council appear to be ignoring issue. I have spoken to many Hook residents who agree that the planning and logistics of the new park has been poor with regards to refuse.

  • Thank you for taking the time to provide your thoughts and feedback. Even with my personal efforts of litter picking the site most days, it is extremely disappointing to continually receive these comments. I can confirm the Parish Council has just taken delivery of a new bin for the skatepark, which we hope will encourage users to actually use one of the (soon to be)2 bins on the site or 4 in close proximity of the area. These bins are all emptied 3 times a week, I monitor this regularly to ensure this is enough, by checking the bins are not overfilling on a regular basis. There have been a couple of times recently when the bin by the teenage shelter is full, but on both occasions this was after a weekend, when there has either been an event at the school or in Hartletts.

We appreciate the time you have taken to feedback, but I can assure you the Parish Council works extremely hard to keep all areas maintained to a high level for all members of public to enjoy, we just wish everyone would pick up their rubbish and either take it home or use one of the many bins on Hartletts Park / Skatepark / Play area.

    Kindest Regards

  • Appreciate your efforts Sarah and I agree that it’s a shame after the community spending so much money on the skateboard park that so many supervised and unsupervised people chuck their rubbish wherever they like. Once the new bins are in place there will be no excuse and let’s hope parents will encourage their children to either clean up after themselves or take their rubbish with them. Like you I spend a lot of time and effort litter picking mainly in Bell Meadow around school gates and bench (bin at top is often overflowing) as well as Harletts Park. It would be nice if there was a bin wherever there is a bench as these are the worst places for collecting rubbish. We require more bins, more signage and more collections all over Hook not just Harletts Park.

  • Although the promise of extra bins was muted they haven’t materialised nor has any signage. Continues to be a daily problem inmost park areas not just the skate park.

  • Dear Resident

Thank you for taking the time to comment on FixmyStreet. Whilst we are very grateful of the time you take to keep areas in Hook clean. It is disappointing to read your comments regarding Hartletts and the Skatepark still having litter issues. There are 20 bins in Hartletts (which are emptied 3 times a week) and last year the Parish Council installed several litter signs to visually discourage members of public dropping their litter. I am up on both sites at least twice a day and have found both areas clear of rubbish. Therefore I would be grateful if you could send to me (amenities@hook.gov.uk) dated photo evidence of these issues.

  • I continue to send in photos as and when the park area bins are overloaded to the above email address as well as report on Fixmystreet. Some areas are worse than others and we recently had a discussion regarding a resident who uses the bin at the top of Michell's field as her personal dump. This morning was the first time the skateboard park was clean and our work might just be working. Much of the rubbish is down to bad education by irresponsible people. More signage and more bins would help.

I understand the local Amenities Tip in Hartlet Wintney is going to be closed so i think we can expect more fly tipping once that happens!
