Containers of Hazardous Waste

I reported this last Monday, 24th August. There were 12 containers then. I returned to bridge yesterday to check if they had been removed. They have not and now 20 containers are there. Some of the containers have a skull and crossbone on them!! Some have name on them ..Siren Finchampstead, which is Brewery in Finchampstead. So some or all these containers have come from this Brewery. As this is hazardous waste...when are they going to be removed??

  • Thank you for your report. This matter was first reported to Hart District Council on 12 August 2026 and was referred to the Environment Agency, as the containers had been deposited within a watercourse and were reported to contain an unknown liquid. Council officers subsequently attended the location and removed the containers from the watercourse in order to reduce the immediate risk of pollution or other harm. The containers were placed securely on the adjoining land pending further assessment. This was a precautionary intervention to address the immediate risk to the watercourse and should not be interpreted as the Council accepting responsibility for the subsequent collection or disposal of the containers. Both the watercourse and the adjoining land on which the containers are now situated are privately owned by the same landowner. Hart District Council does not have a general duty to remove fly-tipped waste from privately owned land. As the owner of the land through which the watercourse passes, the landowner also has responsibilities as a riparian owner. These include responsibilities relating to the flow of the watercourse and taking reasonable steps to prevent pollution and obstruction. The fact that the waste was originally deposited within the watercourse does not transfer responsibility for its removal to Hart District Council. The original incident was reported to the Environment Agency under incident reference 02548918 for their assessment and any action they considered necessary. As the containers have been removed from the watercourse and are now situated securely on privately owned land, Hart District Council will not be arranging their collection or disposal. Responsibility for making appropriate arrangements for the containers to be assessed and, where necessary, removed and disposed of through a suitably authorised waste contractor rests with the landowner.
